SafeRack Designed and Installed a Durable Aluminum MarinaStep SAS Gangway to Provide Safe Vessel Access
An aluminum marine gangway for barge and ship access is an essential link between shore and vessel. These walkways must withstand heavy use in harsh, corrosive environments. SafeRack’s MarinaStep Aluminum Marine Gangways are engineered for marine terminals, refineries, and shipyards that need reliable, code-compliant access for crews, contractors, and passengers.
Aluminum Marine Gangway for Barge and Ship Access
SafeRack designs each aluminum marine gangway for barge and ship access to suit your pier layout, tidal range, and vessel mix, enabling safe movement regardless of water level or deck height. Marine‑grade aluminum construction resists saltwater corrosion, reduces weight versus steel, and makes it easier to position the gangway manually or with a hoist. Our ship access gangway options include stage, truss, and self‑adjusting stair styles to handle everything from short barge transfers to long spans at deep‑draft berths. Non‑slip walking surfaces, toe boards, and continuous handrails help protect workers in wet, windy conditions common on docks and terminals.
Having reliable access is crucial in the marine industry. Between 2015 and 2024, there were 26,751 casualties in the marine industry, with an annual average of 2,675. Marine terminals and port operations are a frequent source of injury, with a fatality rate of 15.9 per 100,000 workers and a nonfatal injury and illness rate of 4,916 per 100,000 operators. Using a MarinaStep Aluminum Gangway can prevent serious and fatal accidents.
Types of SafeRack’s Aluminum Gangways
SafeRack’s aluminum marine gangways can be customized for your exact operation. The three main types of MarinaStep walkways include:
- MarinaStep Self-Adjusting Stair, SAS Series: the SAS Series aluminum gangway is a step system used for boats, ships, and barges. It has a max length of 20’ and a width of 2’-5’. Power options include crane systems, counterbalance springs, pulley systems, hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders, or winch systems. It has an operational angle of 20 degrees without cleats, and 30 with them.
- MarinaStep Truss Gangway System, TG Series: The TG Series gangways use a U-body construction to reach up to 80’ and support up to 750 pounds. Walk surfaces can be stamped, bar grating, or curved treads with cleat variants.
- MarinaStep Stage Gangway, SG Series: The SG Series walkway is a more maneuverable gangway that can be freestanding or attached to a platform.
All MarinaStep aluminum gangways are built to meet or exceed OSHA safety standards.
