Fractionation

Fractionation is a separation process that divides a mixture of gases, liquids, solids, or suspensions into smaller quantities called fractions. Each fraction contains components with similar properties, such as boiling points, which allows industries to isolate and process materials effectively.

In petroleum refining, fractionation enables crude oil to be heated and separated into components like gasoline, kerosene, diesel, and other hydrocarbon products.

How Fractionation Works

It relies on differences in physical properties, most commonly boiling points. During the process:

  1. The mixture is heated to convert part of it into vapor.
  2. Vapors rise through a column or chamber where temperatures vary with height.
  3. Components condense at different levels based on their boiling points.
  4. The condensed liquids, called fractions, are collected separately.

  • Chemical and Industrial: Isolates chemicals or solvents in manufacturing and laboratory processes.
