Doubling Food-Grade Tank Cleaning Capacity

How Kenan Advantage Group’s (KAG) Sidney Facility Doubled Food-Grade Tank Wash Capacity with Worker Safety in Mind

tank cleaning

The rise in demand for food-grade transport, particularly for edible oils and their byproducts, has sparked a wave of new investments across the logistics industry. For KAG’s Food Products group, which has grown its fleet significantly in recent years, the need for efficient, dependable cleaning operations has only intensified.

At their Sidney, Ohio terminal, that need translated into action. With a new two-bay tank wash built alongside the existing site, KAG more than doubled its cleaning capacity, positioning the facility to handle up to 16,000 trailers annually. However, as the company expanded its service offering, it prioritized safer working conditions and thoughtful equipment choices that would support present needs and future growth.

As food-grade logistics expand to meet growing demand, KAG’s new wash facility demonstrates how thoughtful infrastructure supports cleanliness and workforce well-being.

A Careful Evaluation of Safety Solutions

The decision to incorporate SafeRack access systems into KAG’s facilities didn’t happen overnight. Tyler Coventry, KAG’s VP of Fleet Services, first became aware of SafeRack products in 2019 through a customer recommendation. What followed was a comprehensive evaluation process, comparing a variety of solutions for access and fall protection across food-grade wash environments.

Ultimately, the quality, configurability, and safety performance of SafeRack’s truck gangway and safety cage systems stood out. The absence of gaps in the cage design, combined with the adaptability of the equipment to site-specific needs, helped set it apart from other options on the market. As Coventry noted, the SafeRack system proved to be markedly different from anything else they considered, offering the level of protection and durability KAG was looking for.

Supporting Technicians With Better Tools

At the Sidney location, SafeRack’s OSHA-compliant safety cages now help technicians safely access the top of tank trailers during cleaning operations. This is a high-frequency, high-risk task, and having secure access from above significantly reduces the potential for falls and fatigue. Combined with overhead fans, updated lighting, and modern driver amenities, the facility represents a noticeable improvement in daily working conditions.

The cage system is not only part of the Sidney terminal—it’s also in place at KAG’s Decatur, Alabama location, providing consistent safety standards across their network.

A Scalable Model for Continued Growth

The Sidney project was the first major facility upgrade undertaken after KAG’s acquisition of Ag Trucking. It also marks a shift toward a more scalable, systems-focused approach to infrastructure. The cage and access systems installed here were chosen for their immediate benefit and how they might fit into future expansions at other KAG terminals.

By choosing SafeRack access solutions, aligning with the company’s broader operational and safety goals, KAG is investing in a replicable model, they are prioritizing performance, and the well-being of its workforce.

Conclusion: Confidence in Every Step

KAG’s new wash facility in Sidney is more than an expansion—it’s a signal of intent. With rising demand and a growing fleet, the company is building smarter, safer infrastructure designed to keep up with the pace of change. SafeRack’s contribution to that effort is simple but significant: reliable access systems that reduce risk and support daily operations. For Coventry and the KAG team, it’s a decision grounded in diligence—a long look at what works, what lasts, and what delivers peace of mind every time someone climbs the platform.
