YellowGate XL Loading Dock Safety Gate Installation at a Manufacturing Facility

Loading docks are one of the most hazardous areas in any manufacturing or distribution facility. When roll-up doors are open and no truck is present, workers face an unguarded drop at the dock edge — a clear OSHA violation and a serious injury risk.

For this South Carolina manufacturer, the hazard was compounded by climate. During summer months, loading bay doors are routinely left open to improve airflow and reduce heat stress on workers. That means more hours of exposure to an unguarded edge — not just during active loading, but throughout the workday.

The facility needed a solution that would protect workers at all times, integrate into existing dock operations, and withstand a high-traffic industrial environment.

The Solution

The facility installed approximately 15 YellowGate XL wide-span safety gates across its loading bay. The YellowGate XL is purpose-built for wide openings like loading docks, where standard swing gates fall short.

The gates operate in a simple, intuitive cycle: they remain lowered as a barrier whenever a dock door is open and no truck is present. When a truck pulls in and loading begins, the gate raises to allow full access. When the truck departs, the gate returns to the lowered position, immediately restoring fall protection.

This passive-by-default design is critical. Workers don’t have to remember to close a gate or engage a latch — the safe state is the default state.

The Installation

The photo shows a row of loading bays, numbered and equipped with dock levelers, dock lights, and vehicle restraint systems. Each bay is fitted with a YellowGate XL gate mounted to the dock wall. Bay 10 (foreground) shows the gate in the raised position with a truck present and the dock light showing green. Adjacent bays show gates in the lowered position with red dock lights, indicating no truck is present and the barrier is active.

The high-visibility yellow finish ensures the gates are immediately recognizable as a safety barrier, reinforcing safe behavior without additional signage.

Results

  • Fall protection coverage – All 15 bays are protected 24/7 when doors are open
  • OSHA compliance – Meets 29 CFR 1910.29 requirements for open-sided work surfaces
  • Ventilation addressed – Doors can remain open in summer without creating unguarded edges
  • Operational impact – Minimal – gates integrate with existing dock workflow
  • Visibility – High-visibility yellow construction reinforces hazard awareness

Why YellowGate XL

Standard swing gates and chains don’t work at loading docks. The openings are too wide, the traffic is too heavy, and the risk of a gate being left open is too high. The YellowGate XL is designed specifically for these conditions — wide-span coverage, durable construction, and a fail-safe lowered position that protects workers even when no one is actively managing the gate.

For facilities with multiple bays, the consistency of a uniform installation also matters. Every dock looks the same, operates the same, and provides the same level of protection — reducing confusion and reinforcing safe habits across the workforce.

About SafeRack and YellowGate

YellowGate is part of the SixAxis family of brands, represented and distributed by SafeRack’s network of Regional Area Managers (RAMs) across North America. SafeRack RAMs work directly with safety, operations, and facilities teams to assess dock hazards, specify the right gate configuration, and support installation.

If your facility has open loading docks, contact a SafeRack RAM for a complimentary on-site safety evaluation.
