Break Away Smart-Hose Safety System
Smart-Hose™ Break-Away Safety System (LL3-B) can help protect your facility from the potentially devastating consequences associated with pull-away incidents. During a pull-away incident, a 2” textile braided hose assembly can be exposed to 12,000 to 15,000 lbs. of pull force before it fails. Smart Hose Break Away can prevent the hose assembly from causing additional damage to plant piping, bulk-heads, tank truck piping and loading arms, which can result in an uncontrolled release of hazardous material.
The Smart-Hose Break-Away Safety System
Break Away Smart-Hose Valve
Smart-Hose Technologies can add an additional layer of protection in hose assemblies, and SafeRack offers three types of Smart-Hose valve designs. The valves can be installed in everything from ¼” ID high-pressure hose assemblies up to 8” ID barge loading/unloading hose assemblies. The Smart-Hose Safety System operates the same in a ¼” ID hose assembly, as it does in an 8” ID hose assembly—the only difference relates to the design of the valve located in each end fitting.

LL1 – Poppet Style Valve Design
The LL1 valve design is integrated in the fittings of hose assemblies from ¼” ID to 1 ¼” ID hose assemblies. The LL1 valve design is a poppet style valve that is integrated in the end fitting. The LL1 valve design works equally as well with industrial gasses, cryogenic applications and hazardous liquids applications.

LL3 – Flapper Style Valve Design
The LL3 valve design is integrated in the fittings of hose assemblies from 1 ½” ID to 8” ID hose assemblies. The LL3 valve design is a flapper style valve that is integrated in each end fitting. The LL3 valve design works equally as well with industrial gasses, cryogenic applications and hazardous liquid applications.

LL3-B – Break-Away Valve Design
The LL3-B valve is a flapper style valve that incorporates an engineered break point in the fitting. The Smart-Hose Break-Away Safety System (LL3-B) is designed to protect facility piping, bulkhead piping, tank truck piping and loading arms from the potential devastating consequences associated with pull-away incidents. The LL3-B Break-Away valve and fitting represents a full flow break-away technology that requires no yearly maintenance. Currently available for 2” ID hose assemblies.
Major Causes of Hose Failure

Pull-Away Incident
Hose assemblies represent the weak-link in any transfer operation except when a pull-away accident occurs. During a pull-away incident a 2” textile braided hose assembly can be exposed to 12,000 to 15,000 lbs. of pull force before it fails. Under these circumstances, the hose assembly may not be the weak-link during a pull-away incident and therefore, can result in additional damage to plant piping, bulk-heads, tank truck piping and loading arms which can result in an uncontrolled release of a hazardous material

Couple Ejection
Any hose assembly can experience a coupling ejection where the fitting separates from the hose. The Smart-Hose Safety System is designed with a valve integrated in each end fitting. If the hose assembly experiences a coupling ejection, the Smart-Hose Safety System is designed to instantaneously shut off the flow in both directions.

Hose Separation
If a hose assembly experiences a complete hose separation during a hazardous chemical transfer operation, an uncontrolled release of the hazardous chemical can occur. The Smart-Hose Safety System is designed with a valve integrated in each end fitting. If the hose assembly experiences a complete hose separation, the Smart-Hose Safety System is designed to instantaneously shut off the flow in both directions.

Hose Rupture
If the hose assembly experiences a rupture during a transfer operation, an uncontrolled release of the hazardous chemical can occur. The Smart-Hose Safety System is designed with a valve integrated in each end fitting. If the hose assembly experiences a hose rupture during the transfer operation, the Smart-Hose Safety System is designed to instantaneously shut off the flow in both directions. Please note that in order for the Smart-Hose Safety System to engage the cable inside the hose assembly must extrude out of the rupture.
Smart-Hose Industrial Applications
Smart-Hose Technologies does not make the hose, instead, we install our safety system inside of the hose assembly and make the hose assembly safer. Our Smart-Hose Safety System can add an additional layer of protection inside smooth bore rubber covered hose assemblies, smooth bore rubber covered teflon hose assemblies, smooth bore high pressure hose assemblies and corrugated metal hose assemblies. All Smart-hose assemblies are custom designed for specific applications.
Smart-Hose Applications Include
- Chemical Transfer
- Petroleum Transfer
- Railroad Car Loading / Unloading
